Why You Remember So Many Dreams — And When Frequent Dreaming Becomes a Problem

1. The Biology of Dreaming — Why We Dream and When
(1) Dreams and REM Sleep
Most vivid dreaming occurs during REM sleep — a stage characterized by heightened brain activity, rapid eye movements, and temporary muscle paralysis. REM sleep is not a passive state. It is an active period during which your brain processes emotions, consolidates memories, and integrates experiences from the day.
