2. What the Research Says — Sleep Position and Nerve Symptoms
(1) A 2019 Study (Published in Hand)
A cross-sectional survey study of 396 participants examined the relationship between sleep position and nocturnal paresthesias — the medical term for nighttime numbness and tingling.
Key findings:
- 33% of the study population experienced nocturnal paresthesias at least weekly.
- Increased body mass index and sleeping with the wrist flexed were associated with a higher frequency of nocturnal paresthesias.
- Side sleeping was associated with less frequent nocturnal symptoms (P = .003).
- In participants with carpal tunnel syndrome, sleeping on the side had a significantly reduced frequency of nocturnal paresthesias.
The conclusion was clear: sleep position modification may be a useful intervention to reduce the frequency of nocturnal symptoms prior to developing carpal tunnel syndrome.
(2) A 2025 Study (Published by Eureka Health, Harvard Medical School Review)
More recent research confirmed these findings and added important detail. The study found that:
- Side-sleepers who tuck their hands under the pillow and stomach-sleepers who flex the wrist underneath the body are at highest risk for carpal tunnel symptoms.
- More than 70% of patients in a 2023 survey reported this posture before waking with numb fingers.

- Fetal position can pinch both wrist and elbow nerves simultaneously.
(3) A 2025 Report (BGNES)
A 2025 report on popular sleep positions warned that “the risk of nerve compression increases in positions that involve bent or tucked arms — popularly known on social media as the ‘T-rex’ pose”. The report noted that sleeping with arms folded under the pillow or tightly bent can cause numbness due to pressure on nerves.
3. Which Sleep Positions Put You at Risk?
(1) The Fetal Position (High Risk)
Curling up tightly may feel secure, but it can simultaneously compress the median nerve at the wrist and the ulnar nerve at the elbow. When elbows are bent beyond 90° for hours, the ulnar nerve is compressed at the cubital tunnel.
(2) Stomach Sleeping with Wrist Flexed (High Risk)
Stomach sleepers often curl their wrists under the torso, compressing the volar surface and keeping the wrist at extreme flexion for hours. Lying face-down also throws the spine out of alignment and is linked to back, neck, and shoulder pain.
(3) Side Sleeping with Hand Under Pillow (High Risk)

Occasional tingling that resolves after shaking out the hand is common and generally not a cause for concern. But certain signs warrant medical evaluation:
- Numbness lasting more than 30 minutes after waking — prolonged sensory loss suggests ongoing compression rather than transient posture-related ischemia.
